The US withdrawal from Afghanistan has prompted a lively debate over what should follow, with some experts vocally calling for a large, multinational UN peacekeeping presence in Afghanistan that would oversee the Taliban¡¯s commitments, facilitate humanitarian aid, and protect civilians. Dr Adam Day is on the need to first consider the demand side of the equation, what Afghanistan needs. Every effort should be made to let the Afghan people set the agenda, he argues.
