A Journey Through Time
Since 2001, the historic centre of Guimar?es has integrated UNESCO¡¯s list of WHS, thanks to the City Hall¡¯s dedicated efforts to rehabilitate, recover, and preserve the area¡¯s ancient history.
In 2016, Guimar?es sought an extension to include the Couros area as part of the city¡¯s historic centre. Today, this area has received the status of a World Heritage Site, expanding the previously designated area to 38.4 hectares.
¡°We congratulate the Municipality of Guimar?es on this honour and share the pride of working every day in a block that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is particularly gratifying to support countries worldwide to build a better future from a historic place full of meaning.¡± ¨C Delfina Soares, Director of ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ-EGOV.
The Campus of Couros, situated in the heart of Guimar?es, vividly represents Portugal¡¯s historical tapestry. Both locals and tourists alike have long cherished this picturesque location for its unique blend of tradition and innovation.
¡°It¡¯s a distinction that should give pride to every ¡®Vimaranense¡¯ (inhabitants of Guimar?es). This is a result of our collective work. The recognition by UNESCO shows that we care for our city and its heritage. With this approval, Guimar?es is now one of the largest areas distinguished as a World Heritage Site of the world.¡± ¨C Domingos Bragan?a, President of the Municipality of Guimar?es.
²ÝÁñÊÓƵ-EGOV: The Electronic Governance Hub
The ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ-EGOV building, rebuilt in 2013, was included in the urban regeneration project, transforming the former tannery factory in Couros into a modern, thriving hub for researchers, policymakers, and international cooperation.
In the coming years, ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ-EGOV and the Campus of Couros will continue to serve as a sign of progress in the heart of Guimar?es. As we address the challenges of the increasingly digitalised age, this UNESCO World Heritage Site reminds us of the enduring values of the history around us.
