The following project outlines ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ-Macau's proposal for the Provision of Research on the gendered implications of Artificial Intelligence on the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda in Southeast Asia (RFP/APA30/2022/06548). The research examines the topic through the lens of three categories of uses of AI in relation to Women, Peace and Security: peacebuilding uses; neutral uses; and conflict-oriented uses. Through this lens, the researchers propose to investigate applications in Southeast Asian countries, associated gender risks, and possible technical and policy solutions.
The research team proposes a hybrid methodology for this project, which will consist of a literature review, social media analysis, and semi-structured stakeholder interviews. The primary and secondary data will be analysed together using the NVivo software, which will allow for interview coding and topic modelling. The research team will then organise an expert meeting on gender and AI, which will have the purpose of both feeding into the research process, through the provision of expert background papers and discussion points, and validating preliminary research results. This research will then be used to create several outputs ¨C a research report, a research summary, and a training module.
²ÝÁñÊÓƵ-Macau's team will be lead by Dr. Eleonore Fournier-Tombs, and composed of several senior researchers including Dr. Mamello Thinyane, Dr. JeongHyun Lee, and Dr. ?milie Peynault. All of the team members have significant experience in related domains, such as gender and AI in Southeast Asia, cybersecurity and cyberresilience, and AI systems. The team will be advised by ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ-Macau's Director, Dr. Jingbo Huang, as well as Professor Preeti Raghunath, from the University of Monash in Malaysia.
